Lisa Marie Presley has personal letter from Michael Jackson removed from auction
When the contents of Michael Jackson’s final home went up to auction last year, a rather unsettling piece of furniture was included: the bed in which he died.
After some expected — and warranted — outrage, the bed was removed from the sale.
Now another item that once belonged to the King of Pop has been pulled from the auction block: a personal letter written by Jackson to his then wife Lisa Marie Presley in the early 1990s.
In the letter, written on lined yellow paper, Jackson complained of insomnia: “I truly need this rest. I haven’t slept [literally] in 4 days now. I need to be away from phones and business people. I must take care of my health first.”
He signed the note, “I’m crazy for you. Love, turd.” (Yes, you read that correctly.) Jackson also drew a box at the top of the letter with the words “smell here” written nearby.
Jackson died in summer 2009 of cardiac arrest caused by acute propofol intoxication. The musician had issues with insomnia and was given the powerful anesthetic to sleep. His personal physician Conrad Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2011 for treating Jackson with the drug in his home.
Julien’s Auctions pulled the letter at Presley’s request, according to E! News. Request for confirmation of this report from Julien’s has not been returned. Update: Darren Julien, founder of Julien’s, confirmed the report to Celebritology. The item, lot 892 of the “Sports Legends and Music Icons” auction, is no longer listed on the auction house’s Web site.
According to a news release, the letter was expected to fetch between $800 and $1,200.
Coincidentally, the letter was listed in a sale that also includes items that belonged to Presley’s father Elvis Presley, including the crypt where he was originally laid to rest. It is still for sale.
