On December 3, 1968, NBC aired "Singer Presents...ELVIS." But most people know it as Presley's '68 Comeback Special, which rejuvenated the King of Rock 'n' Roll's reign. In his book "Careless Love," music historian Peter Guralnick wrote that the program "was the number-one show of the season and...gave NBC its biggest overall ratings victory of the year." To mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic television special, movie theaters nationwide are screening it at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 16, the 41st anniversary of Presley's death. An additional screening will be held on Aug. 20, also at 7:30 p.m. Participating theaters in Middle Tennessee include Regal Green Hills 16, Regal Opry Mills 20 Plus IMAX, the AMC Thoroughbred 20 in Franklin and Regal Clarksville Stadium 16. The event will also include a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the Comeback Special, featuring commentary from the special's director and producer, Steve Binder, and a walkthrough of the NBC soundstage where the special was filmed. Tickets can be purchased at participating box offices or through www.fathomevents.com/The Comeback Special screening also coincides with Elvis Week, which returns to Memphis Aug. 9-18. This year's schedule features concerts, panel discussions, a 5K run, auction and candlelight vigil.
